Interannual variability of nutrients and the seasonal production of phytoplankton in the Southern Ross Sea, Antarctica.

Dec. 8, 2001 Boarded the Polar Star To Prepare For Voyage

Dec. 15, 2001 The Polar Star departs from Hobart, Australia

Dec. 17, 2001 First sighting of the Antarctic ice. Joe first sets foot on Antarctica at Cape Denison.

Dec. 23, 2001 The crew stops to place instruments near Point Martin on Antarctica's Adelie Coast.

Dec. 25, 2001 The crew of the Polar Star celebrated Christmas off the Antarctic coast, 30 miles from McMurdo.

Dec. 26, 2001 The Polar Star dispatches a team by helicopter to Franklin Island to repair another automated weather station.

Dec. 31, 2001The Polar Star breaks through to five miles from McMurdo Sound, clearing a channel for cargo transports to reach the U.S. base. Ice landing to celebrate New Year.

Jan. 1, 2002 On New Year's Day the ship hove to at 77 degrees, 43 minutes south latitude, 160 degrees, 9 minutes east longitude, encountering only minor Y2K glitches, and the crew disembarked for liberty on the ice at 9 p.m. Called Parents.

Jan. 2, 2002 Joe and Kevin to leave the Polar Star by helicopter and settle into guest quarters at McMurdo Station.

Jan. 3, 2002 Our intrepid duo of Joe and Kevin to take a whirlwind helicopter tour of the region around McMurdo.

Jan. 7, 2002 Joe and Kevin to leave Antarctica and fly to Christchurch, New Zealand.
